From Awaji Island, famous island in the middle of the Seto Inland sea just below Kobe. Awaji Island is known from legend as the first island that was formed in the world, and home to Izanagi Jingu, which is the oldest shrine in Japan.
Vintage Japanese doll with traditional straw hat and Geta 下駄 (traditional sandal shoes). Elegant and vibrant colors. From Awaji Island and is a representation of Awa-o-dori dance at the Awaji Summer Festival (Shina matsuri). A photo of the festival dance showing the style of the doll is included in this listing.
Includes wood stand in black with stick that says Awaji Shima (Island). Purchased in 1990’s. Doll in excellent condition, wood stand has some some paint missing on edges but otherwise very good condition. Measures just over 9 inches on stand, quite high for Japanese doll.
